i have a coal fire and i want to fit a gas one but the gas one is too deep can i remove the smoke shelf ?
hi i live in the uk and want to order a new gas fire to replace my old coal one however the gas fireplaces depth is 200 cm but if i knock out the smoke shelf i will have enogh room can i knock out my smoke shelf without any problems with gasses and such?

I think the smoke shelf you are referring to is probably the chairbrick, this is not just a shelf but a back ‘box’ for a coal fire, you will also likely have a damper, this would have to be removed, gas fires have to have a minimum12000mm catchment space, and usually a 50mm clearance from the flue spigot, the chimney has to be swept. the gas metre soundess tested, before and after installation, the chimney must be smoke tested, sealed, no ‘snots’ in the brickwork, the first bend in the flue must be 600mm above the flue spigot, the gas pipe must be correctly sized, sleeved and installed, then burner pressure tested, and/or gas rated, the terminal has to be the correct height, width and type, then the fire has to be certified with Corgi, the ventilation requirementsa have to be calculated, and the fireplace/hearth and chimney commissioned and certified with a plate left on the property stating who did the work. Now, assuming you are qualified and registered to do any of this work, where did you want to start again?
