Old Smokey

My pet rat is 2 yrs. old, and his brother died 4 months ago. Should I buy Smokey a new friend? Is it dangerous

It is not dangerous for him to have a new friend, but you also have to consider that he might not appreciate a “young whippersnapper” coming in and disturbing his territory.

I had a rat that was about a year old when I bought him a young friend. I introduced them through a cage that I placed in the older rat’s aquarium. It was a small travel cage, and I let them get to know each other through the cage for a couple of weeks before they were ever unsupervised together. I also did some supervised visits after a couple of days of them being able to see each other through the bars of the travel cage – but I did it on “neutral territory” – a big rubbermaid container actually.
The older one was not impressed with the youngster at first, but they did end up getting along grandly. The older one lived a few more years after the young one came home, and the young one died about a year after the older one – I never did get more rats, but I bet I will have them again in the future. They are very neat little critters!

Good luck! Just make sure the introductions are safe – and don’t throw them together right off the bat. They are adaptable, and they are social, so odds are they will be fine.
